Final Reflection Video

Final Project Progress Report

At this point my group has done nothing more than talk a bit about ideas. We have decided to meet in a few days to go over ideas after brainstorming individually.

PLN - Final Report

I still use my PLN everyday! It is slowly growing. It helps me remember all the things I need to do when I get online and it helps me to remember where things are that I have found. It is something I will definitely use as a teacher and in my personal life from now on! It is one of the most helpful tools I have found through this class. I tried to take a screen shot but for some reason I can not get it to work!

I failed at this! Going without technology for 24 hours was extremely hard for me! I use my cell phone for EVERYTHING! It's my alarm clock, my reminders, my schedule, my means of communication, even my music in my car! I decided I would start my 24 hours after my alarm went off so that I would at least get up in the morning. I start my mornings with coffee, facebook and the news, this morning I only had the coffee! It was also a very staticy and quiet ride to work! I have no presets in my car because I just use pandora or my itunes music. By the time the evening rolled around I was ready give it up! I talk to my parents, two best friends and boyfriend constantly throughout the day, so this day was also very lonely! I think that was the main thing that bothered me. I was lonely, my roommate and I have conflicting schedules so we don't see each other much unitl late in the evening and by that point I was in the bed hoping to pass the time quicker. No technology meant, no school work, no communication, no television, no music, nothing! My day moved slower and I got alot of cleaning and organizing done!

Little Kids...Big Potential Ms. Cassidy's first grade class shows us their work with blogs, Skype, wikis and Nintendo DS. They did an awesome job explaining all this technology! It amazes me that these 6 year olds are so in tune with technology and the world around them! They are way more informed than alot of adults I know!
Skype Interview with Ms. Cassidy I learned alot of great ideas from Ms. Cassidy's iterview! I really liked her ideas on protecting a childs identity! Like, not mentioning last names, and not posting pictures, and definitely getting permission slips from parents. I think it is so important to make sure our students are protected. I loved that Ms. Cassidy has an assistant for all the tehnology she uses. I think that would be wonderful if everyone could have one. I also find it very amusing that Ms. Cassidy doesn't even use technology in her personal life, yet it's such a big part of what she teaches her students. I also like the idea of groups. The students that are interested in videos, could make a video for the class. The students that are interested in photography could make a picture slideshow to present to the class. Ms. Cassidy also mentioned that she lets her students blog once or twice a week. I think this would be great to get the kids excited about blogging. Maybe use Friday as free Friday. If they do well during the week, then the student can be rewarded by getting to use the computer to blog.

Do You Teach or Do You Educate? Personally, I decided to be a teacher to make a difference. Whether it be one student or all students. I don't want to just teach my students what they need to know to pass, I want to inspire them to learn! I want to teach them about themselves and teach them that they are ALL special in some way. According to the video, teaching is telling information, it's giving basic facts to amke someone believe what you are telling them. Educating on the other hand, it means to inspire, to motivate, to lead, to mentor.I want to be an educator not a teacher. After watching this video I have decided to not call myself a future teacher but a future educator. I'm not going into teaching, I'm going into educating. I don't want my students to leave my classroom not knowing that they can do, or be anything they set their minds too. I want them to be inspired, motivated and educated. Not just taught what the state or Alabama lays out for them to learn. But to be educated! Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take the Pencils Home! I loved this blog! I thought it did a great job of getting its point across. The point was, that instead of trying to eliminate the problem, we sould use the tool to benefit the students. Mr. Spencer tells us about how Gertrude, the School Curriculum Instructional Interventionist Academic Specialist, storms into his classroom and begins to exclaim to him that students should not be bringing pencils home. She stated that bringing pencils home have shown to decrease standardize test scores. She wanted to just throw pencils out of the equation. Tom, the teacher, explains that he has meet with the parents and told them ways that pencils can help them learn. Gertrude was not happy about the situation. Gertrude wanted to get rid of pencils. But what would that help? Pencils aren't the reason the test scores are down, the teachers are! Its simple, if a teacher isn't doing his or her job and giving it 100% the students are not going to excell!

Blog Post 9

I read Mr. McClung's blog about his first year as a teacher, What I've Learned This Year (2008-2009). In this post Mr. McClung says that in his first year as teacher he let the pressures get to him. The pressures of being observed and succeeding. They affectedhis ability to deliever his lesson. He also lets us know that most lessons are not student centered but rather focus more on the delievery than how they will connect with the students. I agree with this. Being observed is part of being a teacher so it's normal that a teacher would worry more about what will be thought baout them versus making sure the students understand. We should try to please our supervisors but we have to make sure that the prority is the students.
Mr. McClung also gives some advice, saying that when we set expectations for our students and they fail, we should not punish them or show that we are upset. We just instead motivate them to do better, to do what we know is their best. That is our job after all, to help students reach their full potential.
Another piece of advice he gives is to not be afraid of technology. To embrace it. I think that this class is excellent for this. It has definitely opened me up to the idea of technology and how wonderful it can be in the classroom. It has most definitely helped me to not be afraid in my future classroom.
Lastly, Mr. McClung says to make sure you always listen to your students and never stop learning yourself. I think being a lifelong learner is essential to being a good teacher. I also feel that when you listen to your students it builds a trust and trust is necessary to help students to be their absolute best.

Next I decided to read Mr. McClung's post, What I've Learned This Year (2009-2010). I really like that he talked about the EDM 310 class in this blog!
This year Mr. McClung was moved from 6th grade science to 8th grade history. Not only did he change grade levels, he also changed subjects. This could not have been easy for him. As a teacher you never know when you will be moved. We need to be adaptable and open to change.
Mr. McClung says that he tried to involove his students with debates but the students gave answers that they felt the teacher would like instead of their own opinions. He wanted his students to think for temselves and voice their own opinions. He didn't want them to look for the right answers but to share their own. Mr. McClung says that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make his students WANT to learn. I love this! I want to be able to inspire my students, to light their fire to find what they are passonate about and run with it! I had a teacher that did that for me. She thought outside the box and made things interesting and new. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have ever discovered my passion for teaching. When others discouraged my goal, she did nothing but push me! I hope to do the same some day.
Mr. McClung also talks about control, how he lets his students have control and independence. I think this is very important. I think that students need control, it helps them mature and gain self discipline.

This Is How We Dream Parts 1 and 2

This video shows up that technology is definitely advancing. Dr. Richard Miller tells us that people are turning to the internet to get their reading materials instead of an actaul book. I know this is true about us as students. It's much easier to look something up on my smartphone or laptop versus going 'all the way down to the library'.

In This Is How We Dream Part 1, Dr. Miller shares his information with other people by having chat sessions with them.

In This Is How We Dream Part 2, Dr. Miller explains iTunes U. He lets you know that teachers can share their lectures with students. Dr. Miller says ideas belong to us as a culture, I had never really thought about it like that but he is very right. We should share all our ideas with everyone we possibly can. I think that technology is a great tool to show and share your ideas with everyone.

These two videos deinitely make you think. We need to prepare ourselves to be able to adapt ourselves to work with technology. We don't have to like the change but it's happening. Slowly, but surely. Writing is becoming extinct and just as quickly as DVDs took over VHS, BluRay i taking oer DVD. Things do not stay the same for very long. This video also shows you how easy it is for people to share their ideas and work with one another. It's amazing how uch technology is benefiting our day to day lives.

Carly Pugh's Blog Post #12

Carly did such a good job here. Se is trying to get you to create a playlist that describes your teaching philosophy. Her instructions were east to follow and she explained the whole process really well. She uses Dr. Miller's hope for writing with multi-media because the process is comepletely internet based. No pen and paper necessary

The Chipper Series and EDM310 for Dummies

Chipper not only procrastinates, but doesn't turn her assignments in at all. Then Chipper turns around and blames the teacher for her failure, but truthfully she never put forth the effort. Chipper ends up dropping out of school, and creating hr own school where no work is required. This doesn't last and the school is shut down. Chipper then gets her degree online. She graduates and gets a teaching job and gets fired after 4 days. Chipper then decides to get her educatio the right way.

That is how the world tries to fuction. People try to get by wih the bare minimum, and ultimately it does not work. It only takes 4 years to get a degree, why not work as hard as you can to get itover instead of failing and procrastinating and making it last alot longer than that!

EDM310 for Dummies was adorable. I knew nothing about blogger wither! I think that point was to not give up. Just because it's new and others may understand more than you, doesn't mean you can give up. There are people that are willing to help! The video expresses that this class is time consuming but in the end you will LEARN! Which ultimatly is what we are here for!

Learn to Change, Change to Learn

One of the first things mentioned is that education is ranked 55 out of 55 on a scale made to rank industries on their IT use! Education ranked below coal minig! What kind of priorities are these? Children use technologyto communicate and learn but yet it is banned from schools. How does this make any sense? One of the women in that wideo mentions that technology should begin with the teacher. Which I totally agree with. A change does need to happen in the classrooms. I want nothing more then to help create that change! I want ot help my students to fulfill their full potential! Not only in their education but in every aspect of their lives!

The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler
students holding hands around the world

This video opened my eyes to how advanced students are becoming with technology. It really mkes you think, what will it be like 5 or even 10 years from now? How much more will we advance? It's an amazing thought and I truly believe that the progression of technology is a very good thing for our world.

When the question "Why does the networked student even need a teacher?' was asked it kind of got me worried. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that no matter how advanced technology gets I think teachers will always be needed. Yes, our roles may be smaller and less significant but we will have a role in the school. Students will always need some sort of guidance, even if it's just a simple encouragement on getting something done. Just because technology advances doesn't mean that students will be mature or responsible enough to get things on their own.
So I do believe that teachers are people that will always be needed no matter how advanced technology becomes.

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)

My PLN is very simple compared to this one! I do love it though. I had never heard of it until now and I think it is a great way to organize yourself.

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please? by Scott McLeod

I loved McLeod's post! As a very sarcastic person myself, I found this very amusing. I love how he has taken something so serious and made it humorous yet this effective. In his post McLeod uses sarcasm to talk about people thinking that it is silly for teachers to be teaching technology in the classroom. He sarcastically says, we don't need that! Are you crazy? I have already recommended the post to several friends who are education majors. I think McLeod is basically saying that he thinks anyone who disagrees with teaching and using technology in the classroom is simply crazy, and I couldn't agree more. Technology is nothing but helpful in every aspect of life in my opinion. I use it daily for things other than social networking and shopping. When people say they don't want their kids using it because they are scared of predators, are simply ignorant to the fact that there are so many precautions parents and teachers alike, can take to keep kids safe!

iSchool Initiative

Travis Allen is striving to make public schools better, by turning them all to computer based learning. I personally love this idea. Travis Allen hopes to put an iTouch in the hand of every student so that schools can do away with paper, pencils, copiers and make interaction between students, parents and teachers easier. By using apps created for the iTouch students will have their textbooks as well as the ability to email and take notes, and graphing calculators and maps, all in the palm of their hands. This not only makes the learning process and communication easier it also prepares students for the digital age in which they were born, and also makes things greener! When we no longer have to use paper we save trees! This initiative is something I am definitely in support of!

Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir

Eric Whitacre takes the voices of each member of this choir from all over and blends them together to create one beautiful song. Amazing, simply amazing. The fact that none of these people met or preformed together blows me away. It is truly a genius use of the internet. Making that beautiful music with people that would have otherwise never met is simply amazing. I'm truly at a loss for words.

Teaching in the 21st Century by Kevin Roberts

There are alot of good points in this video. I believe that Kevin Roberts wants teachers in the 21st century to understand that teaching students concepts and facts is not all they need. We need to teach children how to deal with those facts and concepts. How to logically apply them to life. Students can learn anything, they can find any facts, anywhere and anytime thanks to technology. I think as teachers we need to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to apply what they learn. That I believe will benefit and prepare them for life.

Reading Rockets

I saw several apps that can help students learn how to read. One was The Opposites. This app teaches the user about opposites, antonyms, and how to determine what the opposite meanings are.

1st Graders Create Their Own Read-Along Audiobook by Langwitches

I really liked this podcast! I think it's a great idea for teachers. In it a first grade teacher and Langwitches get the students to record themselves in an audiobook. The students could then use the audiobook to help them read along when the stories were. To let the students know that a new chapter had begun there was a distinct sound added.

I really like this idea. I think that it really teaches the children many things. It helps them to learn new words, helps them learn how to follow along and teaches them a little about technology and it's advantages.
It also let's them have a little fun with reading, somthing that is hard to keep students interested in.

Podcasting with First Grade by Langwitches

In this one Langwitches allowed first grade students to be involoved in a podcast. Using the story Vacation Under the Volcano she had the students pretend to be the characters and interview one another asking questions about each chapter. She gave them a chance to practic each sentence before they recorded.

Getting the students involved with podcasting, benefits them in many ways. It teaches them about technology, it allows them to come out of there shells and become comfortable speaking in front of others. This is something I think is good to use with younger students because it does get hm comfortable and will help them when they are i high school giving oral reports.

Listening-Comprehension-Podcasting by Langwitches

This blog was about second graders recording a story and making it into a podcast. The students were in control of every aspect of the podcast. They were allow to edit it and put it into the correct order. They even learned Hebrew and used it in the podcast.

This is an excellent idea. It helps the students learn how to b

ut things in chronological order and work in groups to create a project. I would love to use this idea in my future classroom!

This is my sentence!

Technology in Special Education

These kids are so excited and eager to learn using technology! It's amazing to see technology excite students to learn! Any teacher could use this method, but I think it would definitely be useful in the special education classroom. It would engage and excite students about the material.

How the iPad Works with Academics for Autism

I found the app Intro to Letters. This app can help special needs students learn how to write, pronounce, and hear letters. This video showed how the boy got into learning with an iPad rather than a book or workbook. This also shows how the world is changing, and how we need to accommodate students needs.

Gray's Social Media Count

This will have an astounding impact on my career. How could it not? To me this count just shows how fast technology is advancing! We can not stop learning otherwise we will fail at preparing our students for their future. In 10 years, most of what I have learned through this EDM 310 class will be completely different, not only 10 but 5 years as well. For the rest of my life I will not only be a teacher but a student as well. I hope I never lose my desire and my drive to learn more for my students, because that's who I feel I am learning for. They need me to introduce and familiarize them with all the technology that is around today and will be around for years to come!

A Vision of Students Today by Micheal Wesch

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this video. It confused me slightly. I do feel though that it is harder for students to pay attention in class when they are not interested in the topic and that they do surf the internet or get on a social networking site will in class, but I don't believe that technology is to blame. I feel that it is up to the person using the technology to choose what to do with it. I need my computer for EDM 310 and whether or not I use it for that purpose when I bring it to class or not is my responsibility. I felt like the video kind of blamed technology for students being on social networking sites during class. I disagree with that.

Blog Post 2

Did You Know? 3.0 - A John Strange 2012 Version

This video is a really made me think. The whole time I just kept thinking about how much more advanced the world was then I really thought. For instance I never would have guessed that India is so much smarter than the U.S.! I mean I guess I knew they are smart, but I never really thought about how smart they were. Another fact that shocked me was the fact that China has more English speaking people than anywhere else in the entire world. Seriously? Insane! I think that as a country we need to get on the ball! People come here to succeed not to be a part of a society that puts education at the bottom of it's totem pole. Education needs to be a top priority.

Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman

Years ago education was a top priority. I think this is because people didn't take it for granted! I think we do now. People also take for granted how fortunate we are to be as technologically advanced as we are. People back then had shorter life expectancy because they didn't have the technology in medicine and machines that we have today. There is a country song, "Welcome to the Future", Brad Paisley sings it, part of the song talks about his grandparents writing hundreds of letters to one another while his grandfather was overseas during the war. He then says that he just had a video chat with a company from Tokyo! My dad lives in Saudi and I see his face every day! We are so fortunate to have these opportunities! They make learning more fun and convenient.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

This video also got my mind racing. When Ken Robinson said that we, teachers, are suppose to be preparing and educating students about the what the world will be like in five years, but really, we have no clue. Creativity is as important as education? I completely agreed. Robinson said, some people only think when they dance. The world is changing rapidly. We have to be prepared to learn and to accommodate today's children. I also agreed when Robinson said we are too scared to make mistakes. He's so very right. Instead of learning and adapting we simply sit idle because we are to afraid to get it wrong. Ken Robinson definitely kept me entertained and amused throughout his entire video.

A Vision for 21st Century Learning

Technology is such a great tool in education! I believe that it does nothing but accelerate and help the learning process! Children these days are so technologically advanced, so why not teach them using things that they enjoy and understand. It makes all the sense in the world to me.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

I love what this teacher is doing in her classroom, it is so very inspiring. I would have loved to have been able to be apart of a classroom like that. I love that Davis encourages her students to use technology and shows them the advantages of it. I hope to one day have a classroom much like this for myself, to show students how to use and how beneficial technology can be in their everyday lives. Vicki Davis is a very inspiring teacher.

My name is Brooklyn Rowland, I am 20 years old and a junior at the University of South Alabama. Go Jags! :) I am from Leroy, AL and a 2009 graduate of Leroy High School! Go Bears! I love kids and have an extreme passion for them! I love to teach children and watch them learn. I would consider myself a sports fanatic! My years are not spring, summer, fall, winter. They are baseball/softball season, summer ball season, football/volleyball season, and basketball season! I have 2 younger sisters that are both very athletic. My parents are still together after 21 years. As a family we like to watch and play any sport you can imagine. My father currently lives and works in Saudi Arabia so that he and my mother could afford to send my sisters and I to school. Since neither of them was able to go to college due to financial difficulties, my dad did not want that to be an issue for us. :) I am VERY family oriented and want my own one day. I have been dating the same guy for going on 5 years now and he is my best friend! I'm looking forward to a great semester! :)

Time Management Summary

The two main things I got out of the video by Randy Pausch was to make a to-do list and break it down.In order to manage time you should always have a plan of action. As Pausch said, failing to plan is planning to fail. You should wake up each morning with a plan for the day, a plan for the week, and a plan for the month. Just because you have a plan doesn't mean it can't change but you can only change a plan if you have a plan to start with. When making a to-do list you should break big tasks into smaller tasks. You should also do the hardest and ugliest things first.
